1940,

to provide a sum of £1,000 in all to be spent

over a period of five years approximately to enable one

or more Chinese or Chinese British subjects who have

graduated at Hong Kong University to come to Oxford.

These studentships were to be called Rhodes Trust Post-

Graduate Studentships, and the holders of them were to

have been nominated by the governing body of Hong Kong

University.

We have told Lord Elton, as Secretary of the

Rhodes Trust, of the arrangements which have been made

for placing in Universities in China refugee students

from the University of Hong Kong, and have ascertained from

him that the Trustees would probably be willing to consider

favourably the use of the grant promised to Hong Kong

University,to assist any outstanding candidate from among

these refugees to come to Oxford after graduating. Chia,

Before we can Anally' approach the Trustees, however

it will be necessary for us to consider what means of selection

is available for such candidates in present circumstances,

and we would be grateful if you would explain the position

to the Ambassador and ask him for his views.
